EQUIPPING SCHOOL TEACHERS WITH ICT INTEGRATION SKILLS IN TANZANIA
For two days, November 6-7, 2020, MwalimuHub organised a teacher training workshop to help them integrate some technology tools in teaching their specific subjects. 28 teachers came from 6 secondary schools that are in Morogoro Municipality in Tanzania. On the first Day, school teachers were introduced to different educational technology tools and the basics of creating engaging PowerPoint presentations. On the second day, teachers worked on integrating the learnt tech tools in their own lesson plans for a 40-minute lesson they teach from their different subjects.
At the end of the workshop, I had a chance to have a focus group discussion on how teachers have benefited from the training and how they are going to implement what they have learnt as they go back to their schools. Responses are encouraging.
I am working on developing an effective teacher training Model based on cascade Model that will help teachers who have attended such workshops to be able to train others in their schools and adjacent schools.
Whenever you can hear of the opportunity to build capacity of school teachers on technology integration, please let us know. We can work together to reach Target 4.C of SDG4. This will make us achieve The Africa We Want.

DOING SOMETHING TO TEACHERS DURING THIS TIME OF COVID19 PANDEMIC
Engaging teachers in many professional ways has been one of the objectives of MwalimuHub. So far we have already created 3 online courses that aim to transform teachers from 20th Century type of teaching to 21st century teachers.
In this time of COVID19, while students are at their homes, teachers and educators need some skills (both technology and mental wellness) to help them in trying to engage the students located in many parts with diverse backgrounds.
We have developed a 4-Weeks Course named Teacher Professional Development for Remote Teaching that will give teachers and educators skills and techniques in many ways.
It starts next week, Monday, May 25 to June 23, 2020
Teachers can join the course by registering your details on the link below:

TEACHERS SHARING EXPERIENCES IN THE TIMES OF CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
In thee times of COVID-19, teachers need to know the different technology tools which they can start with as they sail through remote teaching. On May 2, 2020, MwalimuHub (hosted by myself) organised an experience sharing session where teachers from different regions of Tanzania connected online via Jisti and shared experiences on how they are engaging their students when schools are closed. Thanks to Kombo Ramadhan, Philemon Sokime Ngiliule and Jackiline Chaula for sharing your experiences from Tanga, Morogoro and Dodoma on how you are engaging your students in the times of Covid-19. Thank you all others who managed to join our meeting.
The main take away points were discussions on:
1.Technologies (Whatsapp, Google Classrooms, YouTube, Jitsi)
2.Engagement (setting up activities and giving support)
3.Interaction (allowing some form of synchronous interaction where as most of it is asynchronous)
4.Assessment (Feedback of learning: How do you ensure students are learning, how do you evaluate your objectives)
5.Inclusion (all students vs few students in areas with access? physically challenged?))
6.Parents Engagement (How do we engage parents in the process as they support their children at home?)
See you in the next Online meeting.

Online courses have been one of the ways recently used to train teachers and to improve their teaching practices. How you design the modules and how you orchestrate the course matter a lot.
The rewarding part is when they share some really amazing stories on how they are making changes in their own ways after going through some modules in an online course to transform them to the 21st Century. When schools are closed due to
#covid19, online courses would be helpful. Teachers are now reflecting on the experiences they had in the online course which ended recently.

REACHING SCHOOL TEACHERS IN THE TIMES OF COVID-19 OUTBREAK
While schools in Tanzania and elsewhere are closed for a number of weeks due to
#covid19outbreak, teachers are
#workingfromhome in many ways. I invited some teachers online to share with them the opportunities that lie infornt of them in this time of the outbreak. But I started with a question to know how they are moving on with the holiday. Responses were surprising and interesting.
Qn: What are you doing at home now when the schools are closed because of this Corona Pandemic?
Some responses:
>"I am preparing online quizzes and sharing with my students"
>"Just preparing for the situation to be cool. It was not planned so, just waiting for a school to open and proceed with teaching"
>"Am trying to provide some information on on the prevailing situation of Corona pandemic"
Our Live session was taken using Jitsi and Facebook Live (
https://www.facebook.com/groups/962691860459226/)
How is the situation in your countries?

To effectively integrate technology in teaching their subjects, teachers need to be trained on how to develop technology-enabled lesson plans. As they manage to develop their lesson plans, introduce them to some educational technology tools so that they can make sense of what they have been trained on. When that is achieved, let the groups do microteaching sessions so that they can realize all they have learnt on a short teaching session.
This was a teacher training workshop held in Mwanza, Tanzania from January 13-17, 2020. It was aimed at training teachers on how they can effectively integrate technology in teaching their subjects. They were introduced on technology-enhanced lesson plans, and educational technology tools including Mentimeter, Padlet and Windows Movie Maker.

REACHING MORE TEACHERS || TRAINING TEACHERS ON 21st CENTURY TEACHING
When teachers are given continuous professional training, they can improve their teaching practices However, reaching every teacher for continuous professional development is always not easy. With the proliferation of mobile devices coupled with the access to Internet, governments and stakeholders can extend access to teacher professional development.
Having participated in the Innovating Education in Africa Expose 2019 that was held in Gaborone, Botswana, from August 20-22, 2019, I had a lot to learn from the event and I was inspired by recommendation (v) of the Communique of Innovating Education in Africa 2019 that insists to " Strengthen innovative digital technologies for empowering teachers with the necessary digital literacy and ICT skills. Recognize the efforts made by teachers in promoting ICTs through awards, and strengthen alternative education provision including open, distance and e-learning". It is through training teachers and improving their teaching practices that we can ensure inclusive and equitable quality education while promoting lifelong learning (SDG 4).
We have developed an online course for teachers, educators, tutors and instructors, with emphasis on the African context, to connect, share their experiences and learn from each other. It focuses on transforming the 20th Century Teaching (which is teacher-centred) to the 21st Century Teaching (which is learner-centred), with technology as an enabler.
Please share the link below in your networks with school teachers, educators and instructors to participate in this online course for teachers.

How can we help school teachers better integrate technology in their teaching practices?
For some years, research outputs have continued to report teachers' continuing difficulties integrating technology into classroom learning. There are many reasons to this, however, for teachers who are motivated to learn more about how technology can be used to improve their teaching and learning, it is important to note a few points:
1. The training program needs to focus on the core competencies needed to teach a topic.
2. Show how the technology will achieve the targeted learning objective(s)
3. Include examples from specific topics they teach.
4. Include more activities where they get to make immediate practice of what they learn.
In pic: A 2-day teacher training session on technology integration in teaching at Kola Hill Secondary School, in Morogoro, Tanzania. Dec 19-20, 2019.
