With child marriage, school dropout and inaccessible period product on the rise in rural communities around me in Nigeria, the International community has invested financial and adequate resources to break these barriers hindering access and retention of girls in school, but not much impact has been felt due to lack of communication and language barriers in implementing effective interventions.
|Description of Innovation:||
We created the IVY project which uses art based tools and cultural dialogue to break communication barriers and create a mindshift in stakeholders to enable engagement and ownership of project for increased impact.
IVY is a 69 page illustration book using colorful images to depict the consequences of child marriage and health risks associated, school dropout and the core gain of investing in girl education.
IVY has been adapted into a short film and a game card to create edutainment and drive social change.
The project also works to produce reusable period kits which contains pads, pant liners, an illustrative period calendar, knitted wash cloth and a shaving bic.
The game card and illustration book are sold at an affordable rate and the period kit is distributed to girls in rural communities through matched donations.
The project also makes branded shirts, support stickers, mugs which are sold to raise funds for the project.
Through annual art exhibition depicting art works on period and benefits of girl education, we are able to raise funds which is also used to produce more materials.
Our innovation is accessible and can be scaled through funding and investment, integration into schools where the game card and books are made available for students in schools to read and learn and also the materials can be used in communities around the world.
